Sudan activist Tim Nonn to be featured at Peace Camp

By KEN SCHROEDER

Peace Camp speaker Tim Nonn began on May 10 a 40 day fast of 1000 calories a day to stand in solidarity with the suffering people of Sudan. The UN World Food Program recently cut back the daily food ration for Sudanese refugees to 1050 calories because donor countries have contributed less than one-third of promised funds.

Tim will present the story of the military and militia campaign in the Darfur region which has caused an estimated 400,000 deaths and the displacement of 2.5 million people. He will share how he was moved from avoiding news of the genocide to engaging in action.

He began at his Petaluma church, which is pastored by former Modestan and Peace Camp leader Blythe (Osner) Sawyer. The organization he founded, Dear Sudan, raised funds to feed for one day the number of refugees equivalent to the population of Petaluma. The action has spread across the country and Tim is now coordinator of a national effort.

Dear Sudan, in collaboration with other groups, rallied thousands linked in a human chain across the Golden Gate Bridge on April 31 to call for our nation to act to stop the genocide. Tim is engaged in writing a new book, Unlikely Joy: Embraced by Hope in the Struggle Against Genocide.

Other Peace Camp activities

Tim Smart will lead us once again on a star walk and story-telling. There will be a new moon during camp, so the darkness and the absence of city lights should make for outstanding star viewing. In addition, Tim will lead a short nature walk. Saturday will also offer a more strenuous all-day hike. Each day will begin with sunrise yoga with Hoyt Cory. As is our custom, we will have campfires, singing, a talent show and community with interesting peace-minded people of all ages.

We invite you to join us at camp on June 23-35 at Camp Peaceful Pines in the Sierra. (See registration form in this issue of Connections. Advance registration required.-- Click here for registration)
